Unlocking Value: Platforms and Digital Transformation

Platforms are increasingly a key determinant of how much value can be unlocked through digital transformation. This article shares three keys to success.

Artifacts of digital / cloud transformations are everywhere – pilots, agile teams, CI / CD, product mindset, architectures, data strategies – a good start, some with effective outcomes. Accelerating how cloud / platforms / SaaS help companies transform, though, asks us to think about the strategies, tools, and talent differently, starting with business value.

In this article, McKinsey shares three key steps to getting the right value from your digital transformation: (1) linking cloud migration to business outcomes / value, (2) selecting the right platform / technology / migration scenario that’s fit-for-purpose, and (3) transforming the SaaS / Cloud operating model to deliver, effectively and efficiently, in an agile, secure way.

As a follow-up, in the next weeks I’ll publish an article that elaborates on items (1) and (2) above – value and platform strategy. Our practical experience shows that choices made here bound (or enable) long-term capability and outcomes, value / speed-to-value, operational and financial risk, agility, operating model structure, architecture and skill reusability, and talent considerations.
